About Us
Our Story
Established in 2023 by Colorado native Johnna Bavoso, the Sugar Beats originated when Johnna was inspired by Maggie McCloskey of the Colorado Peaches team. Motivated by Ms. McCloskey’s passion for the sport at age 92, Johnna renewed her own interest in softball. Together with her husband and coach, Art Bavoso, and the founding teammates Deni LaRue, Vergi Baca-Devens, and Yvonne Henning, the Sugar Beats were formed. To-date, the team has competed the past three summer seasons locally and across Colorado and Wyoming, including earning a medal at the 2025 Huntsman World Senior Games in Utah.

Our coaching staff is made up of experienced and dedicated professionals who are passionate about sports and about helping athletes achieve their goals.

Planting the seeds of a new legacy.
2023: The Inaugural Harvest
The 2023 season marked the birth of a new legacy. The Sugar Beats took to the dirt for the first time, establishing a culture where high-level competition and deep-rooted friendship coexist. The season was defined by the first "Inter-City Classic" against the Denver Peaches.
Turning passion into competitive heat.
2024: Stoking the Fire
In their second year, the Sugar Beats expanded their competitive circle. While the friendly rivalry with the Peaches remained a highlight, 2024 saw the introduction of a new, formidable opponent: the Colorado Wildfire out of Denver.
Taking the field from Denver to the Huntsman.
2025: The Full Bloom
The 2025 Sugar Beats season was a journey of true grit. Blending seasoned veterans with fresh talent, we navigated 29 hard-fought games (12:16:1) and tested our mettle against the "Best in the West." We’re proud to have medaled at the Wyoming, Colorado, and Huntsman World Senior Games—a testament to SB dedication.

The Colorado Sugar Beats have hit the dirt for the 2026 season, blending rigorous workouts with genuine camaraderie. As we sharpen our skills, the team embraces a competitive philosophy, honoring our deep roots while eyeing championship titles with high hopes.
